Sip of the Week

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen, Bamberg, Germany

About $4.99 for a 16.9-ounce bottle.

No brewery is as synonymous with smoked beers as Germany’s Schlenkerla, also known as Brauerei Heller-Trum. The Bamberg brewery produces several smoked beers, including an Urbock, Weizen, Doppelbock and Helles Lager (the latter uses no smoked malt, but picks up smoky notes from being so close to the other grains). Most popular is Märzen, a beer with an assertive flavor of beechwood smoke and ham that is perfectly balanced by a caramel malt sweetness. If you are not sure if smoked beers are for you, a taste of this will help you decide.
