Today’s traffic: Independence slowed by wreck

Friday morning’s big traffic problem is on inbound East Independence Boulevard.

Police reported a multi-vehicle wreck about 7:20 a.m. on Independence near Briar Creek Road. That is an area where considerable merging takes place, and collisions are not uncommon in the area.

At 8:10 a.m., traffic was moving at a snail’s pace from Idlewild Road into the crash scene.

Otherwise, there are no collisions or lane blockages on major routes in the Charlotte area.

Central Avenue remains blocked as crews work to repair a broken sewer line. The two outbound lanes and one inbound lane remain closed for the second day, between Hawthorne Lane and Pecan Avenue.

There is a break for motorists, with no classes scheduled today in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. It’s a teacher workday, set aside for parent-teacher conferences. That means traffic volume is considerably lighter, especially around schools.

Classes are back in session Monday.

The 8:10 a.m. update:

I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-30 mph from Brawley School Road (Exit 33) down to Gilead Road (Exit 23).

I-85 southbound, Cabarrus County ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-30 mph from George Liles Parkway (Exit 54) down to Mallard Creek Church Road (Exit 46).

Albemarle Road inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph from Lawyers Road to Sharon Amity Road.

Independence Boulevard inbound ... Congestion and a collision at Briar Creek Road; traffic moving 5-15 mph from Sharon Amity Road to the wreck scene; traffic moving 15-25 mph from Idlewild Road to Sharon Amity Road.

Providence Road inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph from the Arboretum to Wendover Road.

I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-30 mph from Providence Road to I-77.

I-77 northbound, south Charlotte ... Congestion; traffic moving 25-35 mph from Carowinds Boulevard up to Clanton Road.

Johnston Road ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph northbound from the state line to I-485.

U.S. 321, Gaston County ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph in each direction between I-85 and Dallas-Cherryville Highway.

Sam Wilson Road at Performance Drive ... Tree down.

Central Avenue near Hawthorne Lane ... Both inbound lanes and one outbound lane closed between Hawthorne Lane and Pecan Avenue, due to utility repairs.

North Tryon Street at Atando Avenue ... Collision; minor delays.
