Construction project begins today on N.C. 51

State crews will begin a six-week construction project Monday on Matthews Township Parkway (N.C. 51) in Matthews.

Officials say the work will result in occasional lane and road closures. And a portion of N.C. 51 in Matthews will be closed for an entire weekend later this month.

Officials say crews will mill and pave a section of the road between Independence Boulevard and Sam Newell Road. Lane markings and pavement markers also will be added.

In addition, crews will install a pipe under Matthews Township Parkway to deal with a persistent problem of ponding on the road. That water often freezes in cold weather, causing a traffic hazard.

Intermittent lane closures will take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. And the entire road will be closed from 8 p.m. Nov. 15 until 6 a.m. Nov. 18. Motorists will have to use Sam Newell Road and Independence Boulevard as a detour.

The project is scheduled for completion by Dec. 13.
