Cox Mill sophomore Sarah Jiang falls short of title

Cox Mill sophomore Sarah Jiang again fell one match short of winning the school’s first individual girls’ tennis title, losing in the 3A singles final at the N.C. High School Athletic Association championships Oct. 25-26 at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Jiang, ranked seventh in the state in the class of 2016, lost to Heidi Swope of Weddington for the second time in as many weeks. Swope, who beat Jiang to win the 3A West Regional title a week earlier, won the 3A state title with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jiang in the final.

In advancing to the finals, Jiang had only one tough match in three rounds. She breezed through the first two rounds with straight-set wins over Julianna Hall of Cameron Union Pines in the opener 6-1, 6-1 and Ashton Walker of Pikeville C.B. Aycock in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-2.

Jiang had to battle to a three-set win over Asheville’s Adrienne Haynes in the semifinals, however, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
