Jet circles Charlotte area for 90 minutes, lands safely

Passengers headed to San Francisco from Charlotte logged extra flight time Sunday when their US Airways jet encountered mechanical problems.

The pilot of an Airbus that took off from Charlotte Douglas International Airport about 12:45 p.m. notified authorities that the jet’s nose gear failed to retract.

Fire crews were scrambled, with initial reports that the jet would circle and land in Charlotte about 1:15 p.m. But the flight crew decided to circle in an area west for Charlotte for about 90 minutes, to burn fuel and lighten the weight of the jet.

The aircraft, with 191 passengers and crew aboard, landed safely about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
