Police: Pedestrian killed after jumping in front of vehicle

Monroe police said Monday the pedestrian who was hit and killed Sunday night jumped in front of the vehicle before being struck.

Police say no charges have been filed in the death of Jack Wayne Zimmerman III, 26, of Monroe. He was struck about 9:30 p.m. on Old Charlotte Highway near Overhill Drive, on the west side of Monroe.

Pete Hovanec, a spokesman for the City of Monroe, said police had been called about 9:30 p.m. about a suspicious person in the area around the 3200 block of Old Charlotte Highway. Hovanec said that while a police officer was talking to the person who had made the call, the officer heard a loud noise on the road nearby.

Investigators say Zimmerman was walking eastbound, facing westbound traffic. For some reason, he jumped in front of a westbound 1998 Ford Expedition driven by a 36-year-old Monroe man, police said.

Zimmerman died on route to CMC-Union, police say.

The investigation into Zimmerman’s death is continuing.
