Challenger John “Jack” Edwards appeared to outpoll longtime Pineville Mayor George Fowler in complete but unofficial returns Tuesday, while Huntersville Mayor Jill Swain appeared to be winning a close race with challenger Jim Puckett.

In Pineville, Fowler was trailing Edwards by about a dozen votes at 10 p.m., 282 votes to 269. Fowler has run unopposed for the past decade and served as Pineville’s mayor since 1995.

This year, Fowler faced challengers Libby Boatwright – who served for years on Pineville’s Town Council – and Edwards, who has served on Pineville’s Parks and Recreation Steering Committee.

“I didn’t know I got elected, I was in bed,” Edwards said once all precinct reports were in. “I got a call from a major citizen of Pineville telling me it was the biggest upset of the century.

“I was surprised because George has been mayor for 20 years, it’s difficult to unseat a sitting mayor.”

In Huntersville, Swain was seeking her fourth term as mayor and faced a tight challenge from Puckett, who previously served on the board of education and as the county commissioner representing Huntersville.

At 10:15 p.m., Swain led Puckett by 26 votes, 2,467 to 2,441, according to the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections.

“This is probably the hardest I’ve ever had to work on a campaign,” Swain said. “I’m honored.”

Attempts to reach Puckett and Fowler were unsuccessful.

In Cornelius, voters approved bond packages of up to $11.15 million for road improvements and sidewalks; up to $5.25 million for parks and recreation; and up to $4 million for downtown redevelopment, which could include a community/art center.
