Congestion and collisions aren’t the only traffic problems today in the Charlotte region.
Vice President Joe Biden is in town for the day, and authorities say that will mean some traffic slowdowns.
Biden is in the Charlotte area for a fund raising speech. Authorities have not said where he will be speaking, but the Observer has received several reports of heavy police activity and detours near the Ballantyne Hotel on Friday morning. Motorists should avoid that area if possible.
At 8:45 a.m., several motorists reported near-gridlock conditions on Johnston Road and on nearby roads, such as Ballantyne Commons Parkway and the I-485 interchange.
The motorcade taking Biden to and from the event will force temporary road closures. Motorists can expect those closures Friday morning and again later in the afternoon.
Otherwise, a few collisions are being reported on Charlotte-area roads.
The biggest headache is congestion, caused by heavy traffic on interstates 77, 85 and 485.
