Clover shoppers check out new Bi-Lo store

CLOVER The Bi-Lo grocery store that opened Friday in Clover, where a Piggly Wiggly closed just weeks earlier, has attracted a lot of traffic from customers eager to check out the new store.

The store at 136 Main St. opened with new signage and featured familiar faces and products, Bi-Lo officials said.

“We are excited to welcome this new Bi-Lo store to the South Carolina market,” said Sam Blaiss, Central region vice president for Bi-Lo stores. “We invite shoppers to visit the store and learn more about Bi-Lo’s money-saving programs and quality products.”

Tanya Pettus, who has already shopped at the store twice, said the store has been the subject of a lot of excited talk around Clover, and the parking lot has been busy.

“I think it’s a good change, because Clover residents are so used to the Pig,” she said about the longtime Piggly Wiggly store. “Everyone is excited about it.”

The Clover location is one of 22 stores in South Carolina and coastal Georgia that Bi-Lo purchased earlier this year from Piggly Wiggly.

The Piggly Wiggly store closed Nov. 9.

Calvin Rash, district director of Bi-Lo stores for York County, said sales at the Clover store have been brisk. He said business has “doubled and tripled” from what the Piggly Wiggly was doing.

“We have been very pleased with the sales so far,” Rash said. “The customers expressed their appreciation. They really came out to the store.”

Rash said Bi-Lo didn’t take on a full remodel for the store opening, but it did make some cosmetic improvements, both inside and outside.

The inventory now includes about 1,400 Southern Home products and about 70 to 100 more varieties of produce, he said.

Kim Meets of Clover, who shopped at the new store this week, said she thought it featured a better selection of both meat and produce.

Jennifer Williams of Clover agreed, although she thought some of the prices were a bit higher. “It’s got a good selection. A lot more fruits and vegetables than the Piggly Wiggly. It just looks better.”

In addition to the variety of products shoppers at the new Bi-Lo can register for the company’s value programs, including the fuelperks! fuel rewards program which allows customers to earn gas savings every time they shop with their My Bi-Lo bonus card.

Bi-Lo also touts its “price lock” program that freezes the prices on hundreds of essential items over an extended period.

“While the name on the store has changed, what has not is what matters most – providing shoppers with friendly customer service and the freshest foods at the greatest prices, while giving back to the neighborhoods BI-LO serves,” Blaiss said.

Bi-Lo Holdings LLC, which purchased the Clover store, is the parent company of the Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie grocery chains.
