Holiday traffic: Congestion eases; ice a problem in spots

Interstate highways and other major roads across the Southeast remain crowded Wednesday evening, as tens of thousands of Carolinas residents continue on their Thanksgiving holiday journeys.

Congestion which caused major snarls earlier in the evening have eased. There are a few trouble spots, but the traffic flow is good, for the most part.

We’ll keep you updated all evening with conditions locally and in surrounding states.

Here is the 8:25 p.m. update:

CHARLOTTE REGION

I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Moving well.

I-77 northbound, Lake Norman area ... Moving well.

I-85 southbound, Cabarrus County ... Moving well.

I-485 outer loop, northeast Mecklenburg ... Congestion due to construction; traffic moving 40-50 mph from I-77 to Providence Road.

Albemarle Road inbound ... Collision at Sharon Amity Road; minor delays.

Independence Boulevard outbound, Union County ... Congestion in Union County; traffic moving 30-40 mph from I-485 to Rocky River Road near Monroe.

I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Moving well.

I-485 outer loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion and construction-related delays. Traffic moving 20-30 mph from I-77 to Providence Road.

I-77 northbound, south Charlotte ... Moving well.

Johnston Road southbound ... Moving well.

I-85 southbound, west Mecklenburg and Gaston counties ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-30 mph from I-485 to Mount Holly (N.C. 273).

I-85 southbound, Gaston County ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-25 mph from Exit 17 (U.S. 321) to Exit 14 (N.C. 274).

Brookshire Freeway outbound at southbound I-77 ... Collision; moderate delays.

ELSEWHERE IN SOUTHEAST

NORTH CAROLINA

No wrecks reported on interstates at this time.

Icy conditions reported on U.S. 321 and other routes in higher parts of Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Mitchell and Madison counties.

SOUTH CAROLINA

I-85 northbound, near mile marker 75 in Spartanburg County ... Collision blocking one lane; backups for 2-3 miles.

I-85 southbound, near Gaffney ... Congestion; traffic moving 30-45 mph.

I-26 northbound at mile marker 154, near Orangeburg ... Collision that is also causing slowdowns in the southbound lanes.

VIRGINIA

I-95 northbound, between Richmond and Washington ... Two crashes in Spotsylvania County, at mile markers 122 and 118, with a 4-mile backup of traffic; another crash at mile marker 111 in Caroline County, with 2-mile backups.

I-81 southbound, Frederick County ... Collision at mile marker 310; no slowdowns in northbound lanes.

GEORGIA

I-85 southbound, south side of Atlanta ... Two wrecks causing slowdowns for 8 miles.

Ice being reported on several roads in northern part of the state.

TENNESSEE

No wrecks reported on interstates at this time.

WEST VIRGINIA

No wrecks reported on interstates at this time.
