NASCAR celebrity cars featured at car show Saturday

Hundreds of classic, custom and celebrity cars are rolling into the Ingersoll Rand corporate campus in Davidson for a benefit car show on Saturday, including ones owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and other top names in NASCAR.

The show will support IGNITE, a new community center in Davidson for young adults with high functioning autism or Asperger’s Syndrome.

Ray Evernham, the former NASCAR championship crew chief and current ESPN broadcaster, founded IGNITE.

The center offers activities, skills training and educational workshops to foster social, financial, educational and employment independence for its members.

Saturday’s show is presented by Ingersoll Rand and MSC Industrial Supply Co.

Featured cars will include Earnhardt Jr.’s 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442, Tony Stewart’s 1956 Chevrolet custom pickup truck, Johnson’s 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, Kasey Kahne’s Sprint car driven by Daryn Pittman that won the 2013 World of Outlaws Championship, and Rusty Wallace’s 1978 Chevrolet Corvette.

Among the other featured cars: Gordon’s 2013 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Rick Hendrick’s 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, Marty Robbins’ 1964 Plymouth Late Model Belvedere Fury and Evernham’s 1940 Ford Moonshine Car, 1964 Plymouth Belvedere Fury and 1969 Dodge Daytona Charger.

Some of the celebrity owners will attend the event, including Evernham and Wallace.

The show also will feature live music from local bands, a silent auction, local food vendors and an activity area for children.

The show will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Spectator admission is $5 per person, free for children under 10. The car show awards will be presented at about 2:30 p.m.

The Ingersoll Rand corporate campus is on the edge of Lake Davidson, beside Lake Norman. Parking is available on the Ingersoll Rand campus, 800 Beaty St.
