Steve Shaw and Bill Spencer closed out Lake Norman’s 2013 sailing season by winning class titles during the annual Wilmer Trophy Regatta, held Nov. 23-24.

Shaw, captain of the J/70 “Smokin’ J,” won the spinnaker class title, while Spencer won the non-spinnaker class title in his J/22 “Olive Oyl.”

Shaw posted finishes of first and second in the two spinnaker-class races held, beating out Pete Marriott and Bob McGrath, co-captains of the U-20 “Zulu,” for the class title by one point (3-4).

Marriott and McGrath also posted a race win in the second race, but opened the weekend with a third-place finish.

Treez Decker, in her Tripp 26 “Huntin’ Tripp,” finished third in spinnaker class points.

In the non-spinnaker class, Spencer swept both races to post a perfect score and beat out Ferman Wardell, who finished second in both races in his Hunter 28.5 “Wind-Borne,” by two points (2-4).

John Proctor, captain of the Catalina 315 “LuffrBuoy 2,” finished third with seven points.

Ice Bucker Regatta

Entries are now being accepted for the 2014 Ice Bucket Regatta, the traditional opening event of Lake Norman’s sailboat racing season.

The 28th-annual regatta is scheduled for Jan. 4, with two races scheduled that day to determine class champions in spinnaker and non-spinnaker keelboats with PHRF ratings, and in “one-design” classes such as U-20s, J/24s, J/70s, Highlanders, Flying Scots and San Juan 21s.

The entry fee is $25 per boat, with an additional $5 for non-US Sailing members. Entries received after Dec. 23 will pay a $5 late fee.

An awards ceremony and chili dinner will be held after the regatta at the Lake Norman Yacht Club, with meal tickets available for $6 per person.

Entries can be submitted online at
