A Card Lesson...

Before December 2008, my holiday routine was fairly set in stone.  While the exact dates of my internal timeline slid back and forth depending upon whether Thanksgiving came early or late, I had most (if not all) of my Christmas preparations completed by the end of the first week of December, save for a few last minute stocking stuffers and baking cookies.

In the ensuing years since, I cannot seem to get it together…

I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting slower, if I’m pulled in too many different directions to do anything in a timely manner or if my heart simply isn’t in it anymore.

For five years I’ve questioned why I feel the need to continue doing certain things at this time of the year, especially when most of the world considers them to be passé…

Such as sending Christmas cards, for example…

Late at night, as I’m writing them out, I always tell myself this will be the last year.  But something happens when I pull out my dog-eared address book and start flipping through the pages…

Maybe I change my mind because it’s a tangible link to my old life, to a brighter time when the entire world seemed wide open and full of possibilities...

I must be old-fashioned, as I don’t know many people who actually still use an antiquated organizer (circa 1994) like I do; nevertheless, there is something compelling about leafing through my tattered notes on these well-worn sheets of paper…

Many of the significant life moments of my friends and family have been recorded between these shiny black covers, alternately scratched out, penciled in, struck through and written anew: moves, marriages, births, divorces, deaths…they’re all recorded here…

It’s an annual walk down memory lane, a time of remembering the way things were, of the people who have come into my life and those who’ve departed from it, for whatever reason…

My accidental accounting demonstrates no matter how much of a fixture someone seems to be in your life or how solid a relationship appears, given enough time, it will inevitably change…

Without question, change is one thing you can count on.

Just another life lesson, learned from an old school address book…
