WADESBORO A 13-month-old Gaston County girl died late Wednesday night of injuries suffered several hours earlier in a head-on collision in Wadesboro, authorities say.
Alexis Machon Hooper was a passenger in a car being driven westbound on U.S. 74, according to police and family friends. Five other people in the two cars were hurt, including one person who was listed in critical condition.
According to Wadesboro police, a Volkswagen westbound on U.S. 74 apparently crossed the center line and collided with a Dodge. Police are not sure what caused the westbound car to cross the center line and say the case remains under investigation.
Three adults in the Volkswagen were hurt and treated at Anson Community Hospital. The young girl, later identified as Alexis, was seriously injured and airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center.
Two people were in the Dodge. One was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center and the other taken to Anson Community Hospital.
Police say the young girl was in a car seat.
