ROSEMONT, Ill. The Chicago Wolves defeated the Charlotte Checkers 4-3 Sunday, despite a 36-save performance from Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Anton Khudobin, who made his Checkers debut on a conditioning stint.
Aaron Palushaj (two goals) and Nicolas Blanchard (three assists) each had three points for Charlotte, which also got a goal from Justin Shugg and fell to 1-1 on its three-game road trip.
Off since a 3-2 win against Milwaukee on Friday, the Checkers never seemed to have the same amount of energy as Chicago, even though the Wolves had played games in Lake Erie on Friday and Saturday.
Two Wolves goals – one by Michael Davies in the second period and another by Sebastian Wannstrom in the third – came as the result of long shifts in the Checkers’ zone in which the Wolves simply wore down a defense that couldn’t find a way to clear the zone.
Khudobin had not played a game at any level since suffering an ankle injury Oct. 13 in Carolina. Charlotte’s 40 shots allowed marked its second-highest total of the season.
Blanchard, a veteran of 434 AHL games, tied his career high for points in a single game.
Eight of the Checkers’ past 11 games have been decided by one goal, with the Checkers’ winning six of the games.
