Traffic backs up after a wreck on the ramp from southbound I-85 to southbound I-77.

One of Charlotte’s biggest traffic trouble spots is the scene of a major problem at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Traffic is snarled on southbound Interstate 85 because of a wreck earlier this morning on the ramp to southbound Interstate 77.

That ramp is the scene of frequent crashes, and as is usually the case, it caused a closure on the ramp from I-85 to I-77. Crews were able to open one of the two lanes shortly before 7:30 a.m., but traffic is backed up to beyond Sugar Creek Road.

Charlotte fire Capt. Mark Basnight said nearly 20 firefighters were called to free a motorist trapped in a sedan. Medic says one person was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Here is the 7:25 a.m. update:

I-85 southbound, north Charlotte ... Traffic backed up for 4 miles, due to earlier wreck on the ramp from southbound I-85 to southbound I-77.

South Tryon Street at Westinghouse Boulevard ... Collision; moderate delays.
