A man who authorities say was trying to pass a truck in a no-passing zone was killed in Union County on Tuesday afternoon.
The N.C. Highway Patrol identified the dead man as Johnathan Brian Darrino, 22, of Monroe.
Darrino was headed west on Monroe-Ansonville Road just north of the city of Wingate on Tuesday afternoon around 4 p.m. when he tried to pass a garbage truck despite being in a no-passing zone, said Trooper John Burgin.
As he was trying to maneuver back into the westbound lane, he lost control of his Honda Accord and went back across the center line, smashing his car into a 2011 Ford F-150. The man driving the truck wasn’t injured, but Darrino, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene, Burgin said.
No charges were filed in connection with the wreck.
