ROCK HILL A Rock Hill teenager was shot in the back Sunday after a gunman opened fire on him and another teen while they were walking down the street near Winthrop University, police say.

At about 10:30 p.m., police were sent to Simpson Street, off Friedheim Road, after receiving calls about someone suffering from a gunshot wound. When they arrived, they spoke with the teen, 14, who said he was shot while walking on Constitution Boulevard past Columbia Avenue, according to a Rock Hill police report.

The bullet grazed the boy on his back, the report states. Police found a small bullet hole in the boy’s book bag. Paramedics took him to Piedmont Medical Center, where he received treatment.

The boy claimed he was alone as he ran from Columbia Street to Simpson Street, a 26-minute walk, the report states.

Before police left the scene, a neighbor told officers that he heard two gunshots behind his house and saw a young boy running down Simpson Street, the report states. Police spoke with the victim at the hospital. Later, officers spoke with one of the boy’s relatives, who said the boy told her he was with another teen, also 14, when he was shot.

The victim told his family member that he and the other teen were walking near a home when someone came out the back door and began shooting at them, the report states. The teens began running down the railroad tracks when one of them was hit. Police tried speaking with the witness, but he refused to cooperate. Police also could not make contact with the owner of the home where the gunman fired.
