Union Co. facing $26M deficit in upcoming budget

MONROE Union County commissioners need to balance a 2014-15 general fund budget that has an estimated deficit of $26 million, county officials said Tuesday night.

Driving the deficit in the $262 million general fund budget are previously identified capital needs from the school district, Jeff Yates, the county finance director, told commissioners at a work session. The deficit does not include the $91 million judgment against the county that the school district won at a trial last year over budget funding issues.

“The county and Union County Public Schools have to work together to mitigate these challenges,” Yates said.
