Kannapolis police probe 15-month-old’s death

Kannapolis police say detectives are investigating the death of a 15-month-old girl.

Chief Woody Chavis said police originally were contacted by hospital officials over what he classified as “an assault.”

According to police, the child originally was taken Monday to Carolinas Medical Center-Kannapolis and then transferred to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte because of the serious nature of her injuries. The girl died Wednesday, police say.

“Any information released at this point would be detrimental to the successful resolution of this case,” Chavis said in a statement.

He said detectives are continuing to interview witnesses and look at evidence.

The identity of the child has not been released.
