Observer Staff Reports

Fire officials in Matthews and Hickory are telling the public not to be concerned by two practice burns on Saturday.

The Matthews Fire Department will burn the vacant house, in the 800 block of Elizabeth Lane, off N.C. 51, as a training exercise. Firefighters will begin the operation about 7 a.m. and hope to finish around 5 p.m.

In Hickory, firefighters from across the county will burn a house in the 2000 block of 12th Avenue NE, behind St. Stephens Lutheran Church. The drill, offered through Catawba Valley Community College, is scheduled to begin around 8:30 a.m. and expected to be finished by 3 p.m.
