Fe Read, 32 of Southpark, started working on The Matching Dots in the summer of 2011 and launched their first collection in December of 2011. Fe is the Managing Director and one of the founders of The Matching Dot. Keep reading to see how this amazing clothing company gives back!

Q. How did The Matching Dots begin?

A. I found a gap in the market when I threw a party for my then two year old daughter and couldn’t find any cool and trendy matching outfits for us to wear at the party.

At about that same time my best childhood friend was moving back to the US after spending 3 years studying fashion design in two of the best fashion schools in the world, and then working for famous designers in both London and in Brazil. When she came back to the US, she felt it was the perfect time start her own fashion label.

When she approached me, I had just moved to Charlotte from Denver, CO and was planning on being a full-time mom.

However, when we talked about what our company could do, I didn’t think twice about accepting. I knew that by creating beautiful dresses we could make thousands of women and children feel confident about themselves.

We also pride ourselves on using the best seamstresses here at home in the United States. In addition, philanthropy and giving back to our community is a huge part of our business. Finally, ever since attending business school together 15 years ago we have dreamed of owning a company together.

Q. What all does Matching Dots manufacture?

A. We design and manufacture polka dot designer dresses. We have a line for girls, moms, dolls and even dogs!

Q. What sizes?

A. Our girl sizes go from 12 months to 8. Women’s go from Small to Large.

Q. What exactly do you do?

A. I am the company’s managing director. Specifically, I am the CFO and Customer Service Executive.

I also manage our relationships with our suppliers and manufacturers, and I hire and manage our employees. I also help Augusta (our designer and my business partner) plan every collection we launch.

Q. What organizations do you work with?

A. We partner with Stop Hunger Now and CASA – Court Appointed Special Advocates. I worked for CASA in Denver for 6 years before starting The Matching Dots. They advocate for abused and neglected children.

Q. How does that work?

A. With Stop Hunger we feed 2 kids for every item we sell. With CASA we donate items for them to auction at their annual fundraisers.

Q. What made you decide to help kids?

A. I have pretty much worked in non-profits for the majority of my career. Even though I majored in business, I have a huge heart for kids and want to make a difference.

I am motivated to seeing this company grow not only because we will create jobs in our community but because I want to make a difference in the world. We want to be able to support every child organization out there!

Q. Why did you choose dots?
A. From the moment Augusta and I decided to start our business we wanted the concept to be unique.

What makes “dots” so unique? It is a fun and stylish way to coordinate matching dresses for mothers and daughters to each look independently beautiful while wearing an outfit that shows the special relationship.

We are all about adding a little bit of uniqueness to our fashion! We have this in mind when we are developing each and every one of our designs. That’s what our motto “Be spotted” is all about: being unique, being original, being noticeable!

Q. Where are the clothes made?

A. Right here in the good old USA!

Manufacturing oversees was never an option we were willing to consider. We are all about supporting our local economy and using the best seamstresses in the world.

In addition to that, short distances to our manufacturers ensure close teamwork and provide us with better quality control while reducing our carbon footprint.

Q. Do you release new items seasonally?

A. Yes! In February we release our Spring/Summer line and in August we release our Fall/Winter line.
