A Winston-Salem resident will join First Lady Michelle Obama in her box to watch the president’s State of the Union address Tuesday.

Tyrone Davis is a fellow with the Environmental Defense Fund’s Climate Corps at Elizabeth City State University. He’s been legally blind since the age of nine. Despite his vision loss, he ran cross-country and track in high school.

He received a political science degree and Masters of Public Administration from N.C. State University. The White House said he’s continued to excel.

Officials said his current environmental work has helped the Elizabeth City State University achieve savings of more than $31,000 a year, and has also resulted in substantial reductions in carbon emissions – nearly 200 million tons annually.
