A Rowan County man faces eight sex-related felony charges after authorities say they found a cellphone showing sexually explicit photos of the man with a pair of 15-year-old girls.

Investigators allege the 21-year-old suspect had sexual relationships with the underage girls, whom he allegedly met on Facebook.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said David James Garland, of Salisbury, was arrested Wednesday afternoon after a deputy found the phone during a search of the man’s car.

Investigators say a deputy stopped Garland as he was pulling out of a convenience store near the town of Faith. A girl was in the car with him, according to deputies.

During the traffic stop, Deputy Jagger Naves said he found marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He said the girl told him she was 15 years old.

Naves said he asked to check Garland’s cellphone, in a search for drug information, but instead found what authorities said were “disturbing pictures and texts involving underage females.”

After being questioned by detectives, Garland was charged with four counts of statutory rape of a 13, 14 or 15-year-old by a defendant at least six years older; two counts of indecent liberties with a child; and two counts of sexual exploitation.

He was jailed under $75,000 bond, deputies say.
