Matchup to Watch

Al Jefferson vs. Pau Gasol: Assuming Gasol can play – he suffered a groin injury against the Indiana Pacers Tuesday – this is a matchup of two of the NBA’s most offensively skilled big men. Jefferson has posted 20 or more points in 10 consecutive games.

Observations

• The Lakers’ age is really showing with Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash both out. This is certainly not the glamor team coach Mike D’Antoni probably thought he was getting for the long haul.

• The Lakers could have saved themselves tens of millions by trading for and cutting Andrew Bynum, but they instead held on to Gasol, whose contract expires after the season.

Tap-ins

• Bobcats coach Steve Clifford’s last job was as D’Antoni’s lead assistant with the Lakers. Clifford was originally hired by Mike Brown, who the Lakers fired early last season.

•  Nick Young is having a big season as the Lakers’ sixth man. He now averages 16.9 points, which ties him with Gasol as this team’s top scorer.

Did you know?

Former Duke forward Ryan Kelly is just the third Lakers rookie to score 17 or more points in consecutive games in the past 20 years. The other two: Bryant and Eddie Jones.
