↑  Sarah Beal: Matthews native who played at New Hope Christian (Thomasville) had a career-high 13 assists for Providence College against Butler University this week. That was one shy of the Big East record. Beal, a freshman, averages 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.

↑  Myers Park girls: Moved up from No. 14 to No. 12 in MaxPreps’ Xcellent 25 ranking.

↑  DJ Cunningham, Cherryville: Transfer from Lincolnton has paced Cherryville. Cunningham’s brother, Yung Sherrill, is a freshman on the team. DJ averaged 12 points for Lincolnton as a junior last year and averages 22 now, including a 40-point game and 10 20-point games.

Friday’s Top Games

Harding (8-8, 4-3 SoMeck) at No. 12 Ardrey Kell (14-4, 7-1), 7:30 p.m.: Ardrey Kell has won three in a row and four of five. The Knights are one game behind first-place Berry and one game ahead of third-place Olympic in the league standings. A Harding upset vaults the Rams into the conference championship race.

No. 13 Butler (13-4, 6-1 Southwestern 4A) at Myers Park (12-6, 4-3), 7:30 p.m.: Butler is tied for first place with Independence in the league. East Meck and Myers Park are tied for third. The Mustangs can’t afford a loss to their rivals.

Charlotte Christian girls (12-6, 2-1) at Providence Day (19-3, 4-0), 6 p.m.: The top two teams in the league meet. Providence Day won the first meeting earlier this month. In the boys game, Christian (7-16, 1-2) is looking to play spoiler against the first-place Chargers (18-3, 4-0). Christian gave the Providence Day boys a tough game before falling 68-56 on Jan. 14.

No. 16 East Rutherford (13-4, 8-2 SMAC) at No. 9 Shelby (17-1, 11-0), 7:30 p.m.: If anyone is going to catch Shelby in the league standings, it had better start Friday. This is one of the area’s better basketball rivalries. Shelby is on a 16-game winning streak and looking to end the conference championship race early.
