Gastonia physician reprimanded by state medical board, charged by sheriff

A Gastonia physician has been reprimanded by the North Carolina Medical Board for unprofessional conduct that included dispensing prescription diet pills to a family member.

Dr. Rodger Lefler, of Gaston Medical Group, signed a consent order with the board, waiving his right to a public hearing and agreeing to pay a fine of $3,000. His medical license was suspended for four months, but the suspension was immediately stayed. The suspension could be reinstated if Lefler fails to comply with terms of the Jan. 2 order.

The order says that, over a five-year period, Lefler took about 30 tablets of phentermine, an appetite suppressant, every two months from his office. Through the office manager at Gaston Medical Group, Lefler declined comment.

On Jan. 23, Lefler was also charged by the Gaston County sheriff’s office with three counts of obtaining controlled substances by fraud.
