A Bright Idea

One Christmas when money was tight, school teacher Dee McNeal decided she would make candles and give them away as gifts to family and friends. “When those candles were gone, they asked for more,” says McNeall, who loved the artistic process of pouring and blending the candles. The hobby soon became a passion, and last year she quit her teaching job to focus on North Carolina Candle Company full time. Working out of her Davidson garage and using soy wax and natural fragrance oils, she makes a variety of candles, which can be found at local retailers including Lake Norman Antique Mall, The Rumor Mill, and The Wooden Stone. “I hit the ground running,” she says. “I’m not a gray area kind of person. You either do it or you don’t.” www.nccandle.com
