John Bland, director of public relations at UNC-Charlotte, walks on the fourth floor beneath the sky lights at the new PORTAL building on campus. PORTAL -- or Partnership, Outreach, and Research to Accelerate Learning -- is a $35 million, 96,000 square foot facility designed to stimulate business growth and job creation along with promoting research and innovation. PORTAL is a commitment by UNC Charlotte to regional economic development leadership. The venue will accommodate entrepreneurs who will have easy access to peers, faculty and students while designing business plans and strategies. PORTAL is the new home of Ventureprise, a venture development organization formerly known as the Ben Craig Center and one of the first university-based business incubators in the nation. Sponsored by the University, its incubator and accelerator program offers entrepreneurs and early-stage businesses affordable, ready-for-business office space, business model development, business growth assistance, coaching and mentoring, relevant education programs and connections to businesses and university resources. A tour of the new facility was conducted on Tuesday February 18, 2014.
