Gaston golf course owner killed by falling limb

GASTONIA Joe Ratchford, who built Apple Creek Executive Golf Course in 2005, was killed Tuesday while trimming tree limbs on the course, police say.

Ratchford, 63, died when a large limb fell from a tree and struck him on the head. The incident was reported shortly after 3 p.m., according to police.

Ratchford owned and operated the 18-hole golf course, on Dallas-Bessemer City Highway in northwest Gastonia. Observer Staff Reports
