1 dead, 1 injured in Catawba wreck

CLAREMONT One man was killed and another person seriously injured Thursday afternoon in a single-vehicle wreck in Catawba County, according to the sheriff’s office and the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The wreck took place about 1 p.m. in the 4400 block of Old Catawba Road. That is about 2 miles east of Claremont.

Authorities say the driver of an SUV apparently went off the right side of the road, and when he tried steering the vehicle back onto the road, the SUV overturned. Both the driver and the passenger were thrown from the vehicle, authorities said.

The driver died at the scene. The passenger was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries.

Troopers have not released the name of the victim. The investigation is continuing.
