Caldwell teen struck by vehicle while trying to save his dog

LENOIR A Caldwell County teenager was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after he tried to save his dog and was struck by a vehicle outside his home on Monday morning, authorities said.

The youth ran onto Fairwood Drive after his dog had been clipped by a passing vehicle, the State Highway Patrol in Hudson said. He was trying to force the dog out of the road and back into their yard, investigators said.

Moments later, another vehicle struck the teen.

Fairwood Drive is just northeast of U.S. 321 near Hudson.

Grayson Walker was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

“Pray for him,” his aunt Claudia Walker told the Observer. “He’s an outstanding young man.”

Grayson is a 15-year-old sophomore at West Caldwell High School who loves playing video games, his aunt said.

The incident was reported shortly before 7:30 a.m.

Investigators said they will announce on Tuesday whether charges will be filed against the driver.
