70-year-old man killed; Statesville police investigate

Police in Statesville are working to identify who was responsible for fatally beating a 70-year-old man early Saturday on a downtown street.

The victim was identified as Robert Joseph Dooley. Police say he lived at a nearby motel.

According to investigators, Dooley was found at about 12:15 a.m. Saturday in the 200 block of Chambers Street. That is off Garfield Street, a short distance east of Shelton Street (U.S. 21).

Dooley was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center but died later Saturday morning of his injuries, police said.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Statesville police at 704-878-3406 or Crime Stoppers at 704-662-1340. Steve Lyttle
