Today’s traffic: Heavy traffic near Convention Center

Motorists headed into Charlotte’s uptown on Wednesday can expect heavy traffic near the Charlotte Convention Center during the morning and afternoon hours.

But there are other traffic problems in the Charlotte region at 8:05 a.m.

One problem has been cleared – a truck wreck and fire on Interstate 77 north of Statesville. The northbound lanes of I-77 were closed for about 90 minutes earlier this morning because of the wreck at mile marker 54. The truck has been cleared, but traffic remains slow in the area.

Here is the 8:95 a.m. report:

CIAA traffic today ... About 5,000 middle school and high school students from the Charlotte region will be guests of the CIAA, visiting the Convention Center for Education Day activities. That means a large number of school buses will be dropping off and picking up students near the Convention Center, and many of those buses will be parking on uptown streets.

Students will start arriving around 8 a.m., according to CIAA officials. Activities end about 1:30 p.m.

Matthews construction ... One lane of North Trade Street in each direction will be closed Wednesday and Thursday in downtown Matthews. Crews will be installing curbs and gutters along the road near Matthews Street. Motorists should avoid the area between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Westinghouse Boulevard closure Tuesday night: ... Crews will close Westinghouse Boulevard under I-485 between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The closure will enable crews to work on the bridge as part of the I-485 widening project. Motorists will be detoured off Westinghouse Boulevard onto Nations Ford Road, Hebron Street and South Boulevard.
