When dessert arrived at the table and the words "will you marry me" were missing from the plate, Ben Strope had to improvise his romantic, holiday proposal to girlfriend Mickey Anglemyer during a weekend getaway to Asheville. But he took it in stride and popped the question: "He did a beautiful job improvising," says Mickey. The couple continued the celebration by dancing to live music in the Grove Park Inn's lobby. "It was easily the most wonderful night of my life… until the wedding, that is."

Mickey and Ben knew they wanted to bring their Bohemian and vintage styles to their wedding day, and as a professional artist, the bride wasted no time in creating the decor. "I made miles of fabric garland from dozens of different fabrics and even found fabrics for the groomsmen's ties," she says. "Each tie matched the dress of the bridesmaid that groomsman walked down the aisle." Mickey's mother also designed most of the floral arrangements, including the boutonnieres with accent keys.

Guests could admire crystal animals and china from Mickey's grandmother, old family pictures, and a Tiffany YoYo from Ben's childhood—all treasured family heirlooms among the couple’s DIY creations. To honor the 61st anniversary of Ben's grandparents, falling on the same day as their ceremony, the newlyweds included their wedding album on the guest table. "We wanted our day to be a beautiful mixture of the things that shaped us and made us perfect for each other," says Mickey.
