After four successful years selling their breads and baked goods at the Davidson Farmers’ Market, Sara and Mark Hord are opening, Millstone Bake House and Provisions, in Davidson. The Hords were encouraged to make the leap to a bricks and mortar, bolstered by their many loyal farmers market customers.

The Hords have been looking for the perfect property in which to open their business since 2012. “We looked at properties in Cornelius and Mooresville, but nothing was quite right,” Mark Hord says. So, when an historic building, directly in the middle of Davidson opened up, they jumped at the opportunity. Renovating the space that was formerly the JJ Wade Insurance Company, Mark Hord says, “We took a space that was all offices and changed it to be two thirds professional kitchen, one third front of house, with seating for about twenty”.

Sara and her brother, Chris Waters will be baking, not only the artisanal breads that Millstone is so well known for, but also pastries, croissants, cookies and small biscuit sandwiches to either enjoy at the Bake House or take home. They will also offer gourmet cheeses, charcuterie and small plates along with beer and wines by the glass (or bottle). “We are going to have ‘Parisian Cocktail Hour’,” Sara relates, “And a late bake, where we bake a few loaves of bread at about 3pm every afternoon, and serve thick slices of the warm bread with slabs of locally made butter. You can come, sit and enjoy a snack with a specialty coffee or a glass of wine—or both!”

Millstone has always been committed to using meats, dairy and produce that are as locally sourced as possible. “I will know every farmer we buy from. That’s important to us!” Sara enthuses. These high quality ingredients will be utilized in their prepared food offering, too. Refrigerated lasagna, eggplant Parmesan, chicken cobbler, shepherd’s pie and Portobello mushroom Parmesan are just some of the entrées that will be available in a refrigerated case to eat there of bring home for dinner. They’ll also continue to carry their healthy, hearty salads that are so popular at the farmers market, too.

Millstone Bake House and Provisions is open Wednesday- Saturday 7am to 7pm, Sunday 8am-3pm, closed Monday and Tuesday.
