Girl remains in critical condition after drowning incident

A 7-year-old Charlotte girl remained in critical condition Saturday night after her brother drowned while trying to rescue her from a pond near their neighborhood.

Samiyah Brown is at Carolinas Medical Center in intensive care after her brother Randez Brown, 11, died attempting to save her on Thursday. Neighbors believe the children were in a concrete-lined culvert that empties into a pond near Interstate 77, not far from Marie G. Davis Military and Leadership Academy.

The children were believed to be under the care of their great-grandmother in the Southside Homes neighborhood when they slipped away to join a group of children headed to Davis Creek. Another child died in the pond in 1984.
