A UNC Charlotte student was found dead early Sunday after an apparent fall from Moore Hall, an on-campus residence hall, university media relations manager Buffie Stephens said.
Sadly that is true, Stephens said. I can confirm that, yes, a student did die and that he did fall from a building.
In a statement Sunday, university spokesman John Bland said the student fell from the seventh floor of the residence hall early Sunday.
The 12-story residence hall does not have balconies, although windows in rooms can be opened from the inside, Stephens said.
Although the student, a male, had been identified, Bland said the university would not release his name until the family had been notified.
Police Capt. Todd Lontz said detectives were investigating the death and hadnt determined whether the death was an accident, suicide or some other cause.
Though the investigation is still underway, there appears to be no foul play involved in this incident, said Bland.
Moore Hall has double rooms. A hall bathroom is shared by 12 residents, and a floor lounge is shared by all residents, according to the university website.
Stephens said the building is expected to be closed soon for renovations, although she could not say when.
University plans call for one of the universitys four high-rise dorms to close for renovations in May, although which dorm was not specified. The university plans to renovate one of the remaining three dorms each year after that.
