A man and his two dogs escaped safely Monday morning when fire heavily damaged a home in west Charlotte, authorities say.

The fire broke out about 8:45 a.m. at a residence in the 3000 block of West Boulevard near Holabird Lane, west of Old Steele Creek Road.

Marcus Miller, a Charlotte man who was driving past the house, said he saw thick, black smoke pouring from the single-story frame house, which sits about 50 yards off the road.

“I ran to the house and when I went around to the back door, I saw the man who lives there,” Miller said. “He was able to get out, but he told me he had two puppies under the house.”

Miller said he was able to coax the dogs to safety. “I just called them nicely, and they came running out, like puppies often do,” he said.

Charlotte Fire Department Capt. Mark Basnight said crews found heavy flames and smoke coming from the house when they arrived, just moments after the call. Authorities said a crew of 27 firefighters subdued the blaze in about 10 minutes.

Investigators are working to determine a cause of the blaze.
