When Amie Gallagher moved to Charlotte in the third grade, her family lived across the street from Matthew Lam’s. But in true neighborhood-kid fashion, it wasn’t until Matthew’s older brother hit Amie in the nose with a stick one afternoon that the two families officially met. Amie admits she always had a crush on the groom, two years her senior: “He was the cooler older guy in the neighborhood. But I guess you could say he fell in love with the girl next door.”

The couple began officially dating in 2004 while Matthew attended East Carolina University and Amie lived in Raleigh. Eight years later, Matthew proposed at Folly Beach. “We had discussed being more spontaneous in our relationship, so when Matthew suggested we go to his aunt and uncle’s beach house, I thought nothing of it. But he had it all planned. He got the ring the week before and wanted to get the show on the road!”

After attending the wedding of her best friend’s sister at the VanLandingham Estate, Amie knew it would be her venue. “There was never another place,” she says.

At the end of the beautiful October day, the reception concluded as the bride and groom drove away in Matthew’s first car, a 1985 Jeep and “his second love.” Matthew received the car when he was 16 and the couple spent many afternoons in high school driving around the neighborhood listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd. The groom spent 10 months restoring the car, but Amie insists it was all worth it for one of the most memorable moments of the day. “It was symbolic of us growing up together and remembering where we started.”
