Nannette McDaniel of Gastonia is charged in the alleged abuse of her 4-month-old daughter, police say.

Gastonia police said Thursday a couple had been charged with abusing their 4-month-old daughter, who is being treated at the Levine Children’s Hospital intensive care unit with a brain injury.

Taylor Andrew McDaniel, 19, and Nannette Louise McDaniel, 21, were arrested this week, according to Gaston County Police.

Authorities said they were alerted to the alleged abuse on March 20 when medical staff at Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia told police the young girl had been admitted for seizures. Hospital officials said the child had a brain injury and was transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.

Investigators allege the child had been abused, and they say the crime took place at the McDaniels’ home on Hickory Grove Road.

Taylor McDaniel is charged with felony child abuse and assault inflicting serious injury and is jailed on a $100,000 bond. Nannette McDaniel is charged with felony child abuse and is jailed on a $75,000 bond.

Police say the infant is in the pediatric intensive care unit at the hospital and under the custody of the Department of Human Services in Gaston County.
