Woman killed, then man dies in Lincoln shootout

A man was killed early Friday in a shootout with police in Lincolnton, authorities said.

The death came a few hours after a woman’s body was found a few miles away in Lincoln County, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities have not released the name of either victim, and complete details have not been released. But the series of events apparently began about 6 p.m. Thursday, authorities said, when a delivery driver discovered the body of a woman outside a home in the 800 block of Salem Church Road. That is just east of Lincolnton.

Authorities said they were looking for a man they wanted to interview in connection with the case, and they spotted him shortly before midnight in the parking lot of the Lantern Ridge Apartments. That is on Colonial Village Drive, off Business U.S. 321 in north Lincolnton.

Investigators said the man spotted police and ran into the building. Authorities called in a SWAT team, but they said the standoff didn’t last long.

A short time later, according to authorities, the man came out of the apartment building and fired at police. Officers returned fire, killing the man.

The SBI has been called into the investigation, as is policy in officer-involved shootings.

There is no word about a possible connection between the woman and man in the case.
