Police say a driver has been charged with driving while impaired and felony death by motor vehicle in connection with a crash that killed a man Tuesday evening in south Charlotte.
Michael Perrella, 50, faces the charges after the death of Ramez Ahmed Shams Eldin, 39. The crash took place about 7:45 p.m. on South Tryon Street near West Tyvola Road.
Perrella was speeding as he headed southbound on South Tryon Street in his 2002 Ford Expedition, according to police. Investigators said Perrella slammed into the rear of a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Eldin.
Police said Perrella’s vehicle skidded across the northbound lanes of South Tryon Street and slammed into a telephone pole. Perrella was hospitalized but is expected to recover.
Eldin’s vehicle was pushed onto the sidewalk along South Tryon Street. He died at the scene.
