Mountain Island Lake no-swim advisory lifted

Mecklenburg County officials have ended a swimming ban for a portion of Mountain Island Lake.

Officials say it is now safe for people to come in contact with the water in the McDowell Creek Cove in Huntersville.

A no-swim advisory was issued after about 73,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater was discharged into the cove on March 26. A brief power outage in the disinfection system at the McDowell Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant caused the leak. The flow was diverted to storage basins until the disinfection system was working again.

Water samples collected last week showed that bacteria levels were within safe ranges, authorities said. Observer Staff Reports
