South Carolina man arrested in connection with rape 33 years ago in Charlotte

A South Carolina man has been arrested in connection with a rape that happened 33 years ago.

Timothy Ray Benfield, 52, was being interviewed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Thursday after being charged with rape, kidnapping and robbery.

In July 1980, a University City woman was awakened and raped by a man wielding a knife. After he left, the victim called police, who took DNA evidence.

Decades later, detectives submitted the evidence to a criminal DNA database. They were notified in October of a match. Cleve R. Wootson Jr.
