Newton man accused of attempted kidnapping

A Newton man was arrested Wednesday evening and charged in the alleged kidnapping attempt of a juvenile girl, police say.

Malcolm Devonte Bodie, 21, was jailed under $50,000 bond and charged with attemped second-degree kidnapping.

Newton police said the alleged incident took place about 6:15 p.m. on South College Street. A girl reported she was walking when she was approached by a man in a car. The girl said the man offered her candy if she would get into his car.

The girl ran to nearby Jump Automotive, and an employee called police.

Investigators said officers had the description of the man’s vehicle and spotted it on Main Avenue. Police stopped the car, a white Chevrolet Impala, in a nearby parking lot and took him into custody.

Bodie is scheduled for his first court appearance Friday.
