    All Observer Mecklenburg County Girls Coach of the Year: Marc Sweet, Community School of Davidson



The Marvin Ridge boys and girls indoor track teams showed their depth and versatility this season, sweeping the 3A state team championships.

Mavericks coach Cameron Starr, who led both squads, earned Observer and regional coach of the year honors.

Meanwhile, Providence coach Steve Touranjoe is the Observer Mecklenburg boys indoor track coach of the year after leading his team to an 11th-place finish at the 4A state meet.

Community School of Davidson coach Marc Sweet is the Observer Mecklenburg girls indoor track coach of the year. He led the Spartans to a fourth-place 1A/2A state meet finish in their first year as an indoor team.

Community School of Davidson junior Malia Ellington is the All-Observer and Mecklenburg runner of the year after winning three individual state titles in her first season of organized indoor track.

Monroe senior Reneazia Collins takes home Observer regional runner of the year honors. She won the 55-meter dash and 500-meter run state titles.

Hickory Ridge’s Elizabeth Olesen is the Observer and regional field athlete of the year, as her 5-foot-8 high jump was the best in the state and fourth best in the nation.

Mallard Creek’s Alycia Springs is the Observer Mecklenburg field athlete of the year. She won the 4A state title in the shot put.

Cherryville senior and Florida State signee Trentavis Friday is the Observer and regional runner of the year as he ran the second-fastest 55-meter dash in the nation at 6.30 seconds.

Quashawn Cunningham, a Charlotte 49ers signee, is the Observer Mecklenburg runner of the year. Cunningham won the 4A state title in the 55-meter dash.

Carson’s Andrew Hower and Mallard Creek junior Keon Howe share Observer field athlete of the year honors.

Hower, who is also a standout on the basketball and football teams, won the 3A state title with a 6-foot-6 high jump. Howe achieved a 6-foot-6 jump in the regular season before his 6-foot-4 attempt in the 4A state championships earned him second.

Hower doubles as regional field athlete of the year, while Howe is the Mecklenburg field athlete of the year.
