Supporters of the LGBT community rallied outside Central Piedmont Community College on Friday on behalf of a transgender CPCC student who is gaining national attention over claims that she was detained, questioned and harassed by campus security after exiting a campus women’s restroom on March 18. The student, Andraya Williams, says she was laughed at and bullied by security personnel during the incident. Her cause is being championed by national LGBT rights groups, which are calling for CPCC to make changes in security personnel training. CPCC officials said in a statement that they do not tolerate harassment. “College personnel have been investigating the incident in question for several days, and the goal is to reach an amicable resolution with the student in the near future,” officials said.
