Indian Trail daycare, Creative Care, shuts doors for zoning violation

A judge in Union County ordered an Indian Trail daycare to close Friday following 17 months of notifications from the county and court proceedings.

The Union County Fire Marshal’s office didn’t know Creative Care LLC, was operating until October 2012, when the daycare contacted the office asking for a fire safety demonstration for children who attended the center, the county said.

Creative Care, at 4823 Old Charlotte Highway, offered Christian preschool and after-school care for grades K-8, according to its website. The 9,000-square-foot building held a computer lab, lunch room, multipurpose and conference rooms, offices and classrooms. The website did not say how many students attended.

The daycare’s owners, Roy and Liz Meyreles, could not be reached for comment Saturday.

The building is zoned for a business, but not for a daycare, according to a release from Union County officials.

A few weeks after the Fire Marshal’s office was contacted for the safety demonstration, Deputy Fire Marshal Jon Williams told Creative Care of the violation, the release said. Building Code Enforcement sent the daycare letters about the continued violation through the end of May 2013.

In July 2013, Creative Care gave the county a consultant’s outline of how it intended to modify the building to comply with the zoning requirements. But the business received more letters from the county, through October 2013, because of continued violations and a lack of progress, the release said.

On Jan. 14, Union County filed an injunction against Creative Care, and Superior Court Judge Tanya Wallace signed it March 28, ordering the daycare to close at the end of the day Friday.
