Stephen Colbert, the South Carolina native who's become the face of faux news on Comedy Central, is CBS' top choice to replace David Letterman on the Late Show, according to the Mashable.

The online news site reports that sources within CBS and Colbert's camp confirm there is high interest on both sides.

Colbert’s current contract with Comedy Central runs through 2014. He has hosted “The Colbert Report” in the persona of faux conservative commentator since 2005 after getting his start on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

Colbert, a Charleston native, is reportedly willing to drop his fake-conservative point of view and be himself.
